Freshwater fishing covers everything from small suburban ponds to vast inland impoundments. The right boat depends on the water you fish most. These are the five features that matter most for Australian freshwater anglers.
Freshwater anglers pre-bait specific spots and return to them across multiple sessions. Waypoint memory means you hit the same coordinates every time, not just roughly the same area. The difference between a good mark and a near-miss is often just a few metres.
Fishing for multiple species or baiting two spots simultaneously requires a dual hopper design. Single hopper boats make you choose between accuracy and efficiency on every run. Dual hoppers are a feature worth prioritising even at entry-level price points.
Victorian and Queensland impoundments can require reaching features 200 to 300 metres from the bank. A 300m or better range is a practical minimum for reservoir and large lake fishing.
Still freshwater amplifies noise. Silent brushless motors avoid spooking fish in the shallows, particularly in clear water where bream, perch, and trout are wary. Brushed motors are louder and shorter-lived.
Pre-baiting runs and multiple drop sequences on large lakes drain batteries faster than a single short deployment. A 90-minute or longer runtime gives you a meaningful session without swapping batteries mid-way through a feeding pattern.
Importing RC bait boats from overseas leads to high shipping costs, complex warranty claims, and long waits when you need spare parts. Buying from an Australian supplier gives you:
Everything the Fishing Surfer does, plus a colour Toslon fish finder so you see what's beneath the boat before you drop. $300 off while stocks last.
Use the fish finder (if fitted) to map depth changes, weed edges, and drop-offs before committing to a spot. Carp, cod, and bream hold along these transitions, not randomly in open water. Ten minutes of scouting saves hours of unproductive fishing.
A small feed of boilies or pellet dropped at a GPS-saved spot the evening before your session pulls fish into the zone before you arrive. The same GPS mark on your next visit means you hit the pre-baited area precisely, not just near it.
Fast-moving boats spook fish in calm lake conditions. Slow to low throttle when within 30 metres of your target spot. Letting the boat drift to a stop before triggering the release avoids disturbing the swim you spent time setting up.
Cod feed actively at night and move into shallower water from last light onwards. GPS auto-return becomes essential when your boat is invisible in the dark. Set your home point before sunset and confirm the GPS lock is solid before the light goes.
"Got it out past the second bank at Stockton and dropped a bait right on a mulloway I could never have reached by hand. Worth every cent."
"Sent a big shark bait 400m off the beach at Mandurah on my first session. Had a bronze whaler on within the hour. Could never have done that with a rod."
"Had a cheap one pack it in after a season. The Joysway is a completely different animal. Been using it for snapper and flathead out in the bay. These blokes know fishing."
Carp, Murray cod, golden perch, bream, and trout all respond well to precise bait placement. Carp fishing sees the biggest performance jump because accurate pre-baiting and multiple spot coverage is the core of the discipline. Cod and perch respond well to quiet, precise night-time drops near structure.
Freshwater is easier on electronics and hardware, but the boat still needs rinsing and drying after each session. Weed, mud, and fine sediment can block props and motor inlets if left uncleaned. A quick rinse and prop check after each use keeps the boat in reliable condition.
We do not recommend it. Freshwater-optimised models typically use standard aluminium props and less robust sealing than saltwater-rated designs. Even a brackish estuarine environment accelerates corrosion on components not rated for saltwater exposure.
Load the hopper with your chosen attractant, navigate to the saved GPS waypoint, and trigger the release. You can make multiple runs to the same spot or hit several marks in one session. The boat returns automatically after release, leaving the baited area undisturbed so fish are not spooked.
The Manuowell Assassin is a popular choice for Australian carp anglers. It has GPS waypoint memory, dual hoppers, and a quiet brushless motor. The D001 is a solid entry-level alternative at a lower price point with the same core features.
